Clay Nanocomposites

Clay nanocomposites are matrix reinforced materials with extremely small reinforcing agents.  Clay nanocomposites also offers a chance for the demolition people out there to have the opportunity to burn stuff.  I know some of you like FIRE!!  The clay particles or "special dirt" are mixed on the nano-scale within the matrix.  These smaller particles offer special properties over traditional reinforcement agents and the nanocomposite area is fairly new and exciting.  One particular advantage of clay nanocomposites is its potential for flame retardancy.  These materials would provide tremendous properties for use in cars (engine materials), home building, and other applications where heat is always present and the chance of flammability is high.  The following techniques are used to analyze clay nanocomposites:

1.  Cone calorimetry- analyzes flammability

2.  Thermogravimetric analysis-analyzes weight change due to chemical reaction, degradation, or solvent
     evolution

3.  Physical tests-analyzes mechanical properties, tensile strength, etc.
