Slime--Polyvinyl Alcohol/Borax Gel--Experiment:

  1. Put on safety goggles.
  2. Pour about 40 mL of the 4% PVA solution into a paper cup.
  3. Add 1-2 drops of food coloring.
  4. Add about 4 mL of the 4% sodium borate solution and stir vigorously with the wooden stick.
  5. Remove the "blob" from the cup, put it into a plastic bag and knead it.
  6. Then play with the "blob" and observe its different properties.
  7. Stretch the gel slowly, then try stretching quickly. Compare the results.
  8. Allow the gel to hang freely and note how it flows.
  9. Wash hands when finished. (Students can handle slime but be sure not to eat it or feed it to anyone else!)
