Blood Components Activity
Grades 3-6

Objective:

Illustrate the four components of blood in relative amounts.

Materials:

Red Hots ®
Corn Syrup (light)
Candy sprinkles
Box of white candy like Certs®
Ziploc® sandwich size bags
100 mL graduated cylinder
small mixing bowl
tablespoon

Procedure:

  1. Fill in the first three sections of the lab sheet
  2. Using percentages of each blood component on your lab sheet, find the amounts needed for each component (candies and syrup).
  3. Gather materials.
  4. Measure the amount of the Red Hots ® in the graduated cylinder, and pour into the bowl.
  5. Repeat step 4 for the sprinkles.
  6. Repeat step 4 for the Certs®
  7. Next take a graduated cylinder and put 50 mL of water in it. Pour the measured water into a paper cup. Mark the ouside of the cup with a pencil line at the height of the water in the cup. Pour out the water and use the cup in the next step.
  8. Carefully pour the needed amount of syrup into the cup to the measured line. Then pour the syrup into the bowl with the candies.
  9. Mix everything in the bowl with a spoon.
  10. Divide and put the mixture into the Ziploc® bags.
  11. Press all of the air out of the bag carefully without squeezing any of the stuff out.
  12. Next seal the bag and roll from the top to bottom until you form a tube.
  13. Complete the lab sheet.
  14. Clean your work area.
