Polystyrene is one of the most widely used synthetic polymers in the world.
The monomer for
that polymer is simply unsubstituted styrene.
The para-methyl substituent shown here modifies the monomer and polymer properties marginally
but not enough for this monomer and its polymer to make significant commercial inroads.
